How to choose the right CCTV system for your shop or office

Analog or IP? How many cameras? How much storage? A practical guide before you buy.

A CCTV system is only useful if it records the right things clearly when you need them. Here is what to consider before getting a quote.

Start with the areas, not the camera count

List what you need to see: entry and exit points, the cash counter, stock areas, parking and the boundary. Each area decides the camera type and angle.

Analog HD or IP cameras?

  • Analog HD (with DVR) is economical and good for small shops and homes.
  • IP cameras (with NVR) give sharper images, better night vision and easier expansion — preferred for offices, factories and large premises.

Dome, bullet or PTZ

Dome cameras suit indoor ceilings and are harder to tamper with. Bullet cameras are better outdoors and for long views. PTZ cameras can pan and zoom to cover large open areas.

Night vision matters

Most incidents happen after hours. Check the infrared range and consider colour night vision for gates and parking.

Plan storage for the days you need

Recording days depend on camera count, resolution and hard-disk size. Decide how many days of footage you must keep — commonly 15 to 30 — and size the disk accordingly.

Mobile viewing and alerts

Ask for mobile app setup during installation, along with a demonstration of how to play back and download footage.

Get a site survey

A short site visit reveals lighting problems, cable routes and blind spots that cannot be judged over the phone. We offer a free CCTV site survey before quoting.
