A slow computer costs more than patience. In a shop or office, every extra minute spent waiting for billing software or a spreadsheet adds up. The good news: most slow computers can be fixed without buying a new one.
1. Still running on a hard disk (HDD)
This is the most common cause. Traditional hard disks are many times slower than SSDs. Replacing the HDD with an SSD usually makes Windows start in seconds instead of minutes.
2. Not enough RAM
If you keep many browser tabs, billing software and WhatsApp Desktop open together, 4 GB of RAM is not enough. 8 GB is a practical minimum today; 16 GB for design and heavy multitasking.
3. Too many startup programs
Many applications quietly add themselves to startup. Open Task Manager, go to the Startup tab and disable anything you do not need immediately after switching on.
4. Viruses and adware
Unexpected pop-ups, a changed browser homepage or unknown toolbars are warning signs. Run a full scan with a trusted antivirus and remove unknown programs.
5. Overheating
Dust blocks the fan and the processor slows itself down to stay cool. Cleaning and fresh thermal paste can restore lost performance, especially on laptops.
6. Full storage
Keep at least 15–20% of the system drive free. Move old photos and videos to an external drive or cloud storage.
7. Pending updates or a damaged Windows installation
Interrupted updates and corrupted system files cause freezes. Sometimes a clean Windows installation, after backing up data, is the fastest fix.
